This new house, set within a Conservation Area, included a refurbishment of the 17th century range and reinstatement of the 18th century chimney stack at all levels, a basement cellar and coach house, and the integration of these elements with a new two-storey building frontage, together with the provision of an underground double garage (linked to the 18 th century cellar), to provide a five-bedroom, detached dwelling.
“It’s merit is certainly equal to the existing structure and the inclination is to include that it is in fact a proposal whose impact on the character of the conservation area, while substantial, is in fact a significant improvement, perhaps pointing the way for the quality and expressiveness of future proposals which should be welcome, especially when compared with some of the 20 th century properties that have wheedled their way into existence and have none of the daring, bold aspirations of this proposal and which reflects the aspirations of the Victorian owners amply exemplified by the larger villas and houses scattered liberally through the Mt Sion Conservation Area.”
